Life goes on. . .

So as a young single person, the million dollar question always seems to be "What's new with you?" This of course is a polite and somewhat low-pressure way of saying "Are you dating anyone? Recently get a degree or achieve something impressive in the world of academics or career? or have some other new and exciting adventure that you're just dieing to share with me?" Now, we may not consciously realize that that's what we're really asking when we say things like "What's new? How's life? or How've you been?" But when you really think about it that seems to be the implied question. Recently I've perhaps taken more notice of the fact that I don't usually have anything much to answer any of these questions and often end up just saying "Nothing, same old stuff. . . work, church, friends, family and dating. (Not necessarily in that order, but since nothing really stands out much in any category it doesn't really matter what order they're in anyways right?)
Anyways, As silly of an answer as it seems to just say "Nothing". I've decided that there's no reason to feel guilty about that because sometimes Life just goes on and although it's sometimes hard to distinguish the daily mundane from the noteworthy moments, houses are built one brick at a time and beaches are made up of individual pieces of sand, so collectively, my sometimes boring life is still amounting to something grand, and at some point I'll look back and be able to see the grandness of this stage in life, even if it's not so apparent now.

Someday when you have a house full of kids and you can't remember the last time you did something just for you, you'll look back to these days and think about how fun they were even though in and of themselves they weren't spectacular or noteworthy in any way. That's probably why life keeps throwing new twists at us, to keep things from getting too boring.

You know, I feel the same way with being married for 5 years and no kids. When people ask what's new or how are you doing, it's more than just that. They want to know if you have any exciting news that you are keeping from them. Oh well, I like what you said about Life goes on. It sure does, just not always the way we thought it would be.
